BakeitFun Baking Mat: Reviewed

We like to make homemade biscuits. We made some a few days ago and used a non-stick silicone baking mat. The brand we used was from the company, "BakeitFun." Clever little name huh? This is a 16-1/2" x 11" rubbery texture blue mat with pre-spaced circles for cookies, macaroons or biscuits.

It is made of fiberglass woven like mesh and food grade silicone. The fiber mesh works with the silicone to provide excellent heat distribution, which promotes even baking. The woven aspect of it gives a retro 60's kitchen look in my opinion. I have seen these in other brands in a brownish gold color which really adds to the retro look. This particular mat does not slip or bunch up like other silicone mats I have tried. We have only tried the non woven silicone mats previously. I like that this one stays put. It can be put in a pan according to the manufacturer, which makes it a substitute for wax paper, however we did not test that aspect.

It feels rubbery and almost sticky. I must admit the fiberglass part of it was a new aspect for me. I had always heard of fiberglass insulation for homes, (the itchy pink fluffy fiber with glass particles). I had seen these woven looking mats (silpat) but never new about it being a reinforced glass weave. This special texture provides even heat transfer and assists with releasing foods easily from the baking sheet. When we used this mat for biscuits, I found this to be true, they were simple to remove. Our biscuits were a nice golden tan color when they were finished.

This mat works well in the oven, microwave or freezer, and can be used in temperatures ranging -40F (-40 C) degrees to 450F (230 C) degrees. Flavors or odors will not penetrate the baking mat which is great in case you want to cook fish or french fries on this in the oven. The thought to put this in the microwave does sound a bit odd to me but I am sure it is helpful for some occasions. I want to note, that when I immediately looked over the mat upon its arrival, I noticed a major spelling error on the box. Apparently this mat is also "Frezzer Safe."

The BakeitFun Baking Mat does not need any cooking sprays, which makes fattening things such as biscuits just a little kinder to your waistline (but not by much! I do love a nice fluffy golden biscuit with some homemade sausage gravy...). We had no problem with cleaning this mat when we were finished, and there was no scorching or staining. We only needed to rinse with warm water, wipe with a disinfectant wipe and air dry. You can put these in the dishwasher, but I have not tried doing that yet. I would only suggest that if the mat got really messy.

Final Thoughts and Improvements that need to be made:

I do want to note, that I am not sure where this is made. I am thinking it is not a USA made product, since it does not proudly have the "Made is USA" markings. I also was VERY surprised that this had a spelling error on the box. I would like this to be USA made. I also would have liked a better box for storing this mat. I am not sure how to store it other than rolling up and putting back in the box. The box will not last very long as it is a bit flimsy. The overall appearance is nice, the mat works as advertised, and the ruler like measurements are nice on the edges.
