My husband is 34 and although he has beautiful naturally curly hair everywhere else on his head (unfortunately most current pictures are of him with hair slicked back for his job as a busy restaurant manager) his very top back portion of his head is severely balding in a thin circle. He started thinning around age 29 (receding hairline) but he did not have a noticeable circle of scalp until about 2 years ago. In the last year the circle of scalp peaking out is completely noticeable from far away and it has made him very self-conscious. I attribute to some a combination of male pattern baldness (his father is bald) but also a combination of him not taking his daily multivitamins, not drinking enough water, not eating a regular meal at work (for breakfast or lunch) and being on his feet speed walking from 6 am until 5 or 6pm in the evening most days. Although he is the manager, he does not sit in his office like most restaurant managers do. He feels the need to be in the thick of it right along the wait staff and does everything they do as well (which is fine, but he never sits, not even for 10 minutes). I think the past year at this job has taken some life out of him and you can see it in his face, skin, and hair. As for the male pattern baldness, build up of DHT and other factors has taken a toll on his locks.
We took Christmas pictures this past December and had a spur of the moment when the photographer wanted us to lean in towards each other and kiss (and have Santa cover the eyes of our 4 year old as a little funny moment). When the pictures were completed, the bald spot was very noticeable in the picture (see below) and my husband wanted to try to fill in the spot with a basic computer program (not Photoshop as we do not have that). I must admit, I too would love his natural full and wavy hair to return as he has always had beautiful and soft waves and curls. He usually would wear it in a nice short ponytail or a little past his chin.
We have had him use Rogaine for the past several years, however he has not been the best at applying it or repurchasing it as finances have been rough these past 2-3 years. The thing with Romaine is you must use it consistently 1-2 times per day and not skip days (or weeks). He had skipped about 3 months in a row, and that is when his hair loss went crazy. Cuttingly I am trying to get him to take his vitamins, drink more herbal teas (since he loves hot tea anyway) and have tried to get him to apply hair oils to his hair and scalp.
I was sent a Mens 2 part system from Monat. The system is a shampoo and condition in one infused with "Rejuveniqe" and "Capixl" to help reduce thinning while boosting strength and vitality. It also contains a variety of essential oils, botanicals, and natural DHT blockers. This 2-in-1 system deep cleanses and conditions. The shampoo smells AMAZING (like Andes Mints really) and provides a tingling sensation that penetrates and nurtures the scalp. It almost acts as an exfoliate for buildup of DHT and other culprits that prevent healthy hair regrowth. It helps boost natural hair growth and fortifies the hair follicle to reduce hair thinning.
Here are the Shampoo/Conditioner Ingredients:
Water (Aqua), Lauramidopropyl Betaine, Sodium C14-16 Olefin Sulfonate, Guar Hydroxypropyltrimonium Chloride, Acrylates Copolymer, Sodium Methyl Cocoyl Taurate, Sodium Cocoamphoacetate, Amodimethicone, Stearyldimoniumhydroxypropyl Decylglucosides Chloride, Pisum Sativum (Pea) Extract, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract, Limnanthes Alba (Meadowfoam) Seed Oil, Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil, Camellia Oleifera Seed Oil, Solanum Lycopersicum (Tomato) Seed Oil, Daucus Carota Sativa (Carrot) Seed Oil, Citrus Limon (Lemon) Peel Oil, Citrus Aurantifolia (Lime) Oil, Citrus Aurantium Bergamia (Bergamot) Fruit Oil, Adansonia Digitata Oil, Mauritia Flexuosa Fruit Oil, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil, Gardenia Tahitensis Flower Extract, Moringa Oleifera Seed Oil, Caryocar Brasiliense Fruit Oil, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil, Mentha Piperita (Peppermint) Oil, Mentha Arvensis Leaf Oil, Eucalyptus Globulus Leaf Oil, Mentha Viridis (Spearmint) Leaf Oil, Thymus Vulgaris (Thyme) Oil, Lavandula Angustifolia (Lavender) Oil, Citrus Medica Limonum (Lemon) Peel Glycerin, Tocopherol, Menthol, Cinnamidopropyltrimonium Chloride, Dextran, Propanediol, Glycol Distearate, Sodium Hydroxypropylphosphate Decylglucoside Crosspolymer, Lauramide MIPA, Sodium Hydroxypropylphosphate Laurylglucoside Crosspolymer, Cocamidopropyl Betaine, Butylene Glycol, Oleth-5 Phosphate, Dioleyl Phosphate, Cocamidopropyl Hydroxysultaine, Citric Acid, Trideceth-12, Cetrimonium Chloride, Aminomethyl Propanol, Phenethyl Alcohol, Undecyl Alcohol, Benzyl Alcohol.
It also comes with a daily leave-in treatment spray for thinning hair that helps stimulate the scalp. This spray unfortunately does not smells the same as the shampoo conditioner comb, but it is not a terrible fragrance, just plain like aloe or something. This spray has Red Clover Flower Extract, essential vitamins and active nutrients in it and is said to block DHT and reduce scalp inflammation.
Here are the Ingredients in the Leave-in Spray:
Water (Aqua), Butylene Glycol, Acetyl Tetrapeptide-3, Trifolium Pratense (Clover) Flower Extract, Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein, Dextran, Xanthan Gum, PVP, Cocamidopropyl-PG-Dimonium Chloride, Benzyl Alcohol, Dehydroacetic Acid, fragrance.
My husband washes his hair every day and after wetting his hair, he Applies a generous amount (he only needs about a nickel sized dollop) of the shampoo/conditioner. He then gently massages into his scalp and throughout his hair. He leaves it in his hair for 3 minutes. He rinses thoroughly and lightly towel dries his hair. He then uses a natural Boar bristle and Nylon mix brush and massages his scalp, then follows with MONAT Intense Repair Treatment Spray. It is directs the user to blow-dry and style as usual, but he has never used a blow dryer, as his hair dries really fast. I am hoping that this step is okay to skip (and that results are the same).
So far he LOVES this system, seriously. I can see why, first off the shampoo smells terrific, and I must admit I used it twice myself. He also likes the look of the bottle and the way it opens and closes, by twisting the cap slightly.
He has only used this a month, so there is not any new growth per se, however he says shedding has definitely LESSENED, greatly. He loves the tingling sensation (reminded him of Head and Shoulders shampoo that he would buy specifically for that tingle (never had dandruff). But since we both have been sulfate free for about 2 years, he has not used that kind anymore.
He currently has a little over half the bottle left and we think it will last another full month. The price for the set of 2 items in a bit steep (@$99) but the product does have some amazing ingredients and we love how natural it is. We also love that it is much safer than Rogaine. I am thinking if this works, we could stop the Rogaine and just use this (and get about 2 months at a time of treatment for the cost). The company does have a VIP Customer program to get the products for 15% discount and free shipping but it is an auto shipment set up so you would need to make sure you have the budget for that each month. There is also a set up registration fee of $19.99.
I wanted to showcase his hair over the last 4 years (the first few baby pictures being of my now 4 year old daughter,) notice it is gradually thinner and has much less life and fullness. I hope to post a good "AFTER" picture very soon after finishing the bottle. The shampoo seems to be helping his hair and at least slowing the shedding process. I hope the round scalp picture will be filled in very soon.
I thoroughly recommend this brand and this system. They have other systems as well for women. All MONAT products are sustainable and naturally based, which is something we feel is important. We like the botanical ingredients and naturally-based oils that promote hair growth, improve follicle strength, and add luster. He has had softer hair and it has not felt brittle or dry.

I hope to add some new photos once the bottle is empty of the back of his head. I like to give products adequate time to work. As with weight loss pills or antiaging products, hair loss products need at least 2-3 months to really showcase if they are working (in my opinion). The most dramatic improvements are seen at the 6 month range.
I'm interested to learn how this worked and what your final review of the product is.
